We take our first hike of this season on the Pine Meadow trail. Soon, we diverge onto the yellow-marked trail at the first junction. The clouds of early morning break apart. The sun pierces every gap in the Maple and Douglas Fir canopy.
We reach the waterfall, just past the rock scramble along the white trail. It drops thirty feet, fed by a rain-drenched Stoney Brook that wraps around boulders and rocks as it courses on. Over the roar of the falls, as sun glints off the rushing water, Frankie chats about Finn and other characters from the cartoon Adventure Time.
