Silent Night, Silent Day

Something in the way she drives. Her left hand, turned up, turned down, on and off the steering wheel. Her steely eyes, centered on the road. The 40 MPH sprints on the side streets. The utter silence. I shrink in my seat. Pity my brother, who bears this cold onslaught of not-a-word.

The ride is a bookend of the beginning of this holiday. We picked Robert up on our way to Adelia’s for Christmas Eve. At first, he monologues about the new TZ Bridge. Mira grips my hand so tightly that I almost lose circulation. Then we’re all silent, through an unspoken consent.

Even at dinner, Robert hardly says a word. Through grilled octopus with potatoes and greens; Mariscara with rice; Bollos de Bacalau, Rocuitto, Damplanas, a taste of table red wine: he stays quiet. Other than a line or two here and there. But his eyes dart around, holding a glance that could be a sigh. And more than a few of his yawns may be due to boredom.

While he opened gifts Christmas morning, while sipping eggnog: his silence continued. At dinner that day, through lamb, filet mignon, leftover mariscara and more wine. The same silence.

Until he rediscovers his voice — too late — in the driveway of the Living Center.

As I leave.

What an intriguing story you spin. I wonder at what kept his tongue. What was he processing.

It is all too often the unsaid things that scare me the most. There is only so much time to say them.

Now, you seriously made me hungry, and I will be all the more after googling some of these dishes. Octopus I know, and enjoy, and eggnog but…there may be new delicacies to discover.

Wow! Though I was a little confused by the beginning in present tense to the core past tense verbs, I got a fear, a sadness, a finality. What a way to lose a sibling, to witness a parting from a back seat view–and in a way Always Parting. As always, powerful writing!

Thank you, Susan. To be clear, my brother still lives. He resides in a supported apartment for adults with intellectual disabilities. I’m happy you enjoyed the haibun!

Frank, this poem really speaks to me. My son, stricken with schizophrenia at seventeen, lives in a “group home” facility and leads a very disadvantaged life. I know what it is to bring him to family gatherings, and to take him back. It is a painful reality and you have written it so well.

I guess your brothers perception of ‘home’ has changed as years pass by.
Sometimes when gathering our families together to celebrate Christmas etc as in to include, we unknowingly exclude…
